How I, and how you can take awesome photos of your children
Living in Cornwall is always a blessing as a photographer as there is so many locations to take photos. I live near the the bottom end of Cornwall and taking photos is just so easy down here, there is miles of coastline with beaches and loads of locations for portraits. Having two children is such a blessing for me both in the sense that I have two children! and also the fact they are great subjects for progressing my portrait photography skills. You can easily capture great photos of your children too, with a little patience and some imagination.

I bet you love taking photos of your children as well, which is why I thought I would share this little post with my latest pictures of my two children. Portraiture is fun and doesn't have to be an effort. You can just go out to your favourite location and start snapping. Having a camera always helps though obviously.

Capture them with nice compositions that you can find around the place you are whether that be part of the play equipment or on the beach with some grasses in the foreground throwing them out of focus.

Kids are usually pretty good when it comes to portrait taking and as long as you show them the back of your camera afterward they are instantly interested in the photos. Take for example the picture above my daughter was adamant that she wanted me to take a picture of the seashell in her hand so I took the picture for her and she was pleased with the result. Always good to get good criticism from your subjects.

You don't have to capture your children's faces always, as a parent you know exactly what your kids faces look like or you can have some photos without which a lot of paren't don't always think about doing. So if you catch your children doing something interesting that you know would look nice in a photograph don't get them to turn and fake smile just take the picture. You will be surprised at your results. Like this picture above I caught my little girl on a balance beam over a puddle and she was testing the water with the bottom of her wellies. It made for a great image with the evening sunlight shining over the water making for a yellow reflected puddle and slight ripples from the balance beam she's perched on.

My daughter and son love to have little conversations which never seem to make a lot of sense to me but they seem to understand each other which is great so I love to capture them when their deep in their made up world talking about monsters and nurses and whatever else they seem to come up with. This photo is one I love to have in my collections at home as I have managed to get them happily walking together rather than chasing each other for once, and the morning light is just beautiful with the walkway of sand leading you two the two of them coming toward you.
I have always gone for a candid style to my portraiture and that's not just because it's easy but it's also because I get true emotions from my subjects if you just catch them in the moment. This photojournalist approach I have can get great in the moment pictures rather than spending ages trying to get my subjects to smile. Kids lend themselves especially to this as after a few moments they just forget about the fact you have a camera and just go on about their business.
